Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.
Today I fought a round with a rose bush — and came up bleeding. A true TKO on my love for gardening. Compound that with an aching back and trying to out-trick the ticks, I determined gardening was no longer fun.
That’s a real switcheroo from the many years when I happily spent up to eight hours a week planting, weeding, transplanting and tenderly caring for the numerous flower beds. I used to brag that our gardens had fewer weeds than the house had dust while now the weeds sprout.
Hmmm, maybe I need to adjust my true loves.
Senior living has caught up with me, seriously. Maybe the theme of successful senior living is adjusting our interests to our waning physical abilities. Frustrating, I know. Fortunately, there are numerous exciting and meaningful ways to spend our leisure time.
My next-door neighbor Frank, a widower, now volunteers as a chauffeur for Williamsburg residents who can’t drive themselves to doctors’ appointments. He often finds himself taking people up to 30 years younger to their destinations.
Frank likes to be on the go, and this new venture certainly fulfills that desire. I don’t know his exact age, but he’s definitely near the start of his ninth decade. His energy is ongoing, even if his desire to work on his cars or do yard work abates. Among his activities are Masons, going dancing with a friend, traveling to see his children in New Jersey and New Hampshire, and trips to Europe. He tackled the Autobahn last summer and came home unscathed.
All of them require less physical effort, while creating a lifestyle of ongoing adventures.
As our steps become slower, we can stay open to new ideas. Actually, when a door has closed because of physical inabilities, the Lord has led us into new ways for service and enjoyment.
The quest often can be fulfilled by a trip to your local library. A new book, a new subject to study or maybe a computer class — and zest returns to life.
