KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) is a chain store with its branches spreading all over the world. It also achieved a huge success in China. However, as one of the first American fast food chains to enter Hong Kong SAR, it failed in its first entrance. In 1973, the famous KFC Company entered Hong Kong with a high expectation of the number of KFC reaching 11 in all by 1974. The KFC adopted the advertising slogan, "The flavor is finger licking good." When providing chicken products, they fed the chicken with fish. With aggressive promotion and a special cooking method, it had aroused the customer's desire to have a try. What's more, people in Hong Kong seldom had any western-style fast food before its entrance. There was no seat in KFC at that time, and all the food was being sold as take-away. However, problems soon came up, so it didn't last very long in Hong Kong. By February 1975, all of the stores had been closed. Although it was said to be the result of high rent, failure was inevitable because it just didn't attract the customers. Soon KFC pulled back from the Hong Kong market.
KFC has been one of the most famous international brands in urban China since it opened its first western-style fast food restaurant in Beijing in 1987. In the list of Chinese consumer's most favorite well-known international brands, KFC stood on top as number one. Since KFC began its operation in China, it has carried out aggressive advertising. One feature noticeable in KFC's commercials is its representation of an ancient art form of China -- Beijing Opera. It is interesting to find a U.S. fast food brand presenting a declining traditional art and attaching pop culture elements to it. One of the commercials also depicts a Beijing opera actor in costume and with make-up, having his KFC meal.
In addition to their advertising effort, they also provide diversity in their product line. They provide old Peking Chicken Roll, a wrap modeled after the way Peking duck is served, with fried chicken inside, accompanied by green onions and hoisin source. Sichuan Spicy chicken absorbs the spicy flavor of a Sichuan dish. Chinese-style breakfast, like porridge, is also served since Oct. 27, 2003 on the breakfast menu of all 59 KFC restaurants in Shenzhen.
